In the enchanting city of Hue, nestled amidst the mystical Chau Chu Mountain, lies a testament to the grandeur and architectural magnificence of the Nguyen Dynasty – the Khai Dinh Tomb. With its blend of Oriental and Occidental influences, this awe-inspiring mausoleum is a must-visit destination for those seeking a fascinating glimpse into Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage.

Unveiling Location & History

When Emperor Khai Dinh ascended to the throne in 1916, he chose the scenic slope of Chau Chu Mountain, just 10 kilometers from Hue’s center, to construct his “home in the other world” according to Oriental traditions. The construction of this architectural marvel began in 1920 and was completed 11 years later under the reign of Emperor Bao Dai, Khai Dinh’s successor.

To finance the tomb’s completion, the rulers raised the national tax to 30%. This period witnessed Vietnam’s loss of sovereignty to French invaders and the pervasive influence of Western culture. As a result, the Khai Dinh Tomb reflects a captivating fusion of Roman and Gothic styles, Hindu and Buddhist influences, and an amalgamation of ancient and modern features. It is also known as Ung Lang, a testament to its harmonious blend of diverse elements.

Discovering the Splendors Within

Despite being the smallest of the Nguyen royal tombs, Khai Dinh Tomb stands out as the most recent and costly. Constructed using modern materials such as concrete, slates, and wrought iron, it exudes a striking gray and imposing demeanor.

While the main building initially emanates a strong Western influence, the landscape surrounding it reflects traditional perceptions, showcasing a balanced combination of wood, land, water, and plants. The iconic structure stands resolute with 127 steps, gently leaning against the mountain. Its side walls boast the most extensive dragon sculptures found in Vietnam. Ascending the steps, visitors are greeted by the house of epitaph, adorned with the statues of mandarins, court officials, horses, and soldiers.

The crowning jewel of Khai Dinh Tomb is Thien Dinh Palace. Within its opulent confines reside bronze statues and king’s steles. The walls, intricately decorated with elaborate glass and porcelain designs, immerse visitors in a world of resplendent beauty. The pièce de résistance awaits atop the palace – an exquisite painting on the ceiling depicts nine dragons gracefully frolicking amidst ethereal clouds. Moreover, the tomb houses two remarkable statues, both of which depict the king. The throne sculpture, created in Paris in 1920 by Ducuing and Barbedienne, leaves an indelible impression.

Planning Your Visit

Khai Dinh Tomb welcomes visitors year-round, with entrance fees waived on special occasions like the first day of the Lunar New Year and National Day (September 2nd). The tomb’s opening hours are from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
