Once serving as the seat of the Lower House of the former South Vietnamese government, the Saigon Opera House regained its original purpose as a music theater following the North Vietnamese government’s takeover. Today, this historical landmark stands as a symbol of resilience, reminding visitors of Vietnam’s rich past and vibrant present.

While entry to the theater is currently restricted to concerts only, the exterior view alone is enough to appreciate the magnificence of the French Colonial architecture. With facades featuring three doors and statues of Greek Caryatids of Erechtheion, the Saigon Opera House resembles the iconic Petit Palais in Paris. Atop the building, two angelic statues pay homage to the Lyre guitar, adding to the allure of the facade.

Recent Renovation

To commemorate Saigon’s 300th birthday, renowned architects and artists were invited to restore the opera house in 1998. The result is a harmonious blend of historic charm and modern amenities. Renovations incorporated state-of-the-art electric appliances, lighting and sound systems, and safety equipment. Original architectural and decorative features were carefully preserved, including a stone veranda, white stone statues, granite tiled floors, chandeliers, and bronze statues. The Opera House is now surrounded by stylish shopping plazas and upscale hotels, offering visitors a perfect combination of culture and retail therapy.
