Intriguing and captivating, the Saint Joseph Cathedral stands tall in Hanoi, Vietnam. Steeped in history, this architectural gem tells a tale of cultural fusion and religious devotion. Let’s unravel the story behind this stunning cathedral!

History and Architecture

Back in 1882, after the French army triumphed over Hanoi, the construction of the cathedral began. By 1886, this magnificent structure was completed. Interestingly, the cathedral and the Nha Chung area were built on the land that once housed the Bao Thien pagoda, which dates back to the Ly dynasty.

Adhering to the Gothic style, the cathedral’s design mirrors that of the famed Paris Cathedral. With its 64.5 meters in length and 20.5 meters in width, the cathedral encompasses two bell towers that soar to a height of 31.5 meters. While the exterior exudes Western influences, the interior embraces the Vietnamese aesthetic, adorned with vibrant colors of yellow and red. A statue of Mother Maria proudly stands in front of the cathedral, exuding an aura of grace and serenity.
