History
Gia Long Tomb is not only the final resting place of King Gia Long but also houses a collection of tombs for the King’s family and relatives. These tombs, built between the 17th and 19th centuries, have earned recognition as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The tombs of King Gia Long and Queen are unique as they were constructed during different periods, spanning the reigns of three different kings. While Gia Long Tomb may be the farthest from other emperor tombs, it stands out with its breathtaking natural surroundings. With no extravagant palaces or intricate structures, the tomb complex is nestled among mountains and hills, creating a picturesque setting.

The royal couple’s tombs feature parallel steles of equal size crowned with coal-black roofs. These simple yet elegant steles symbolize the love and loyalty shared by the King and Queen during war and peace.
Architecture
Although Gia Long Tomb is situated farther away compared to other royal tombs, its natural landscape of vast mountains, pine forests, and meandering paths adorned with wildflowers offers a truly awe-inspiring experience. The absence of elaborate buildings and grand palaces allows the stunning surroundings to take center stage. The tomb complex is enclosed by 42 mountains and pine-covered hills, with the grandest peak named “Dai Thien Tho.”

The tomb is divided into three main sections. The center is dedicated to the tombs of the King and Queen, while the hilltop is graced by Buu Thanh, symbolizing happiness and longevity. On the right side, you will find Minh Thanh Temple, a place of honor for the King and his wife. Previously, this area displayed artifacts related to the King’s military life. On the left side stands a stele pavilion, featuring two parallel steles with coal-black roofs, representing the enduring love and loyalty of the royal couple. Unfortunately, only the left stele remains today due to the passage of time and the ravages of war.
How To Get There
Discovering Gia Long Tomb may seem like embarking on a journey to a remote destination, even for locals. However, there are two ways to reach this captivating site.
The first option is to take a boat trip along the Perfume River. You can board the boat at the downtown wharf, allowing you to capture the scenic landscape of the upstream Perfume River. This boat journey is truly worth experiencing, as it provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the picturesque surroundings.
Alternatively, you can travel approximately 16km by car or motorbike to Kim Ngoc Wharf (from Thieu Tri Tomb, follow the riverside road for about 3km) and catch a boat from there. This method is more convenient for those traveling by motorbike, as they can bring their vehicles along on the boat. However, please note that the road conditions may not be ideal. If you choose to travel by car, you may need to walk a few kilometers from where the boat docks.
