With over 70 architectural marvels that vary in size, My Son was considered a sacred land by the Cham people from the 4th to the 13th century. In the 4th century, during the reign of King Bhadravarman, the religious center of the Cham kingdom was established in My Son. It served as a gathering place for royal members, aristocrats, and important religious ceremonies. Over the span of nine centuries, My Son witnessed the rise and fall of the illustrious Champa kingdom.

Originally constructed from wood in the 4th century to honor Saint Siva Bhadravarman, the temple was tragically destroyed by fire in the 6th century. Undeterred, the Cham Kings continued to build new temples and towers to worship gods and showcase their power. However, by the late 13th century, the Champa kingdom faced attacks from neighboring countries, forcing them to move the capital to Binh Thuan province. Consequently, My Son was decommissioned, and no further construction took place on the site.

After being forgotten for centuries, the hidden wonders of My Son Sanctuary were rediscovered by a French scholar in 1898. From 1937 to 1944, the Ecole Francaise d’Extreme Orient undertook the restoration of this sacred complex. Sadly, it suffered extensive damage during the Vietnam War due to American bombings, leaving only 20 out of the original 32 remnants standing today.
Architecture
The architecture of My Son Sanctuary bears the influence of Arabian, Malaysian, Indonesian, and particularly Indian cultures. It represents a convergence of different styles, including ancient style in the 7th-8th centuries, Hoa Lai style in the 8th-9th centuries, Dong Duong style in the mid-9th century, and My Son-Binh Dinh style. All the towers were meticulously crafted from red bricks and sandstone. Even today, the techniques of brick making and construction remain a mystery that continues to captivate archaeologists and tourists alike.
