The Po Nagar Cham Towers in Nha Trang, Vietnam, are a testament to the ancient Cham civilization that had a significant influence in Southeast Asia. As you explore the rich history and captivating architecture of the Cham people, you’ll discover the intriguing connections between the Po Nagar Towers and the renowned Angkor Wat.

History and Location

The Cham civilization flourished for ten centuries, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in Vietnam and Cambodia. With their roots in Indian Buddhism, the Cham people created distinctive architectural marvels and intricate artworks. The Po Nagar Towers, situated on the picturesque Cu Lao mountain in downtown Nha Trang near the Cai River, belonged to the medieval principality of Khauthara.

What to See

Despite some differences from their original design, the four Po Nagar Towers exude timeless beauty and charm. These towers, each dedicated to a unique deity, offer an enchanting glimpse into the beliefs and traditions of the Cham people. The largest tower, standing at 23 meters tall, was built in 817 AD and houses a linga and a statue honoring Ponagar, who is credited with introducing innovative agricultural and weaving techniques to the region. The central tower pays tribute to Cri Cambhu, the deity associated with fertility. Consequently, childless couples often visit and pray for blessings there. The North West tower honors Sanhaka, a woodcutter and foster father to Ponagar, while the southern tower is dedicated to Ganeca, Ponagar’s daughter.
