Located just 60km away from Dong Hoi City, Phong Nha Cavern has quickly become a must-visit attraction in Vietnam. With its stunning natural formations and breathtaking underground river, it’s no wonder why this cavern has gained popularity in recent years.
Unveiling the Enchanting Location
As you approach the East gate of Phong Nha Cavern, you’ll be greeted by a spectacular sight. The mountains and the river converge, creating a majestic scene that captures the imagination. This underground river, known as Nam Aki, stretches for 20km, but only a small portion has been explored thus far.
During the rainy season, the water level rises, covering the entrance of the cavern and making it inaccessible for visitors. However, when the weather is favorable, the cavern’s mouth welcomes you with a width of 20m and a height of 10m. Sitting on a boat, you’ll feel like you’re looking into an inverted giant bowl, with the crystal-clear water resembling a mirror’s surface.
As you venture further into the heart of the cavern, the light gradually dims until it completely disappears. The only sound you’ll hear is the gentle ripples of the floating boat, accompanied by what seems like distant gongs. Locals believe this is the music playing at the God of Mountain’s grand banquet.
A Wonderland of Caves and Halls
Phong Nha is home to more than 20 caves, each with its own unique charm. The main hall stretches an impressive 1500 meters, while the supplement halls span hundreds of meters. The outer caves feature ceilings reaching 10 meters in height, while the inner caves boast ceilings towering between 25 and 50 meters.
From the 14th cave onwards, visitors can explore larger and more treacherous caves, where the process of stalactite formation is still ongoing. Continuing on a boat for approximately 800 meters, you’ll reach the Dried Cave, a place of wonder where stalagmites and stalactites create a breathtaking spectacle of intricate shapes.
Words alone cannot fully capture the majestic beauty of Phong Nha’s caves and halls. The glimmering colors of the underground water reflecting against the massive stalagmites and stalactites create a mesmerizing scene. As you navigate through these natural wonders, you’ll find yourself simultaneously filled with excitement and awe, as if journeying through the insides of a giant monster.
