Legends
According to legend, King Le Loi stumbled upon a gleaming metal bar while visiting a friend. It was revealed that his friend had caught the bar in his fishing net. Intrigued, the King requested the bar and transformed it into a sword. To his astonishment, the words “Thuan Thien” (harmonious with heaven) appeared on the sword.
Realizing that he had received a gift from heaven, King Le Loi wielded the sword in battle against a neighboring country. As peace finally prevailed in early 1428, the King encountered a tortoise emerging from the waters of Thuy Quan, now known as Hoan Kiem Lake. The tortoise proclaimed, “Please return the sword to the Dragon King.” Without hesitation, the King tossed the sword into the lake, and the tortoise retrieved it, resulting in the renaming of the lake to Hoan Kiem.
