Let’s delve into the intriguing history and architecture of this incredible destination.

A Glimpse into the Past

The construction of the Hanoi Temple of Literature began under the rule of Ly Thanh Tong’s dynasty. Over time, it has evolved to become the country’s first university, known as Quoc Tu Giam. Marvel at the Architectural Beauty

The temple is divided into five courtyards, each with its own unique significance and historical background. Starting from the main gate and leading to the Dai Trung gate, the first courtyard sets the stage for what lies ahead. Moving forward, you’ll encounter the Khue Van Cac pavilion, an iconic symbol that can be found on street signs all over Hanoi.

The third courtyard is particularly fascinating, as it showcases 82 tombstones listing the names and origins of 1307 doctors who passed the examinations between 1442 and 1779. Legend has it that rubbing the tortoise head on these tombstones brings good luck, and during important examination periods, you’ll witness students flocking to this sacred spot.

This area also serves as a platform for showcasing outstanding students from Hanoi, honoring those who achieve top results in university entrance exams or excel academically. Finally, the Thai Hoc house, which was once the first university in Vietnam, offers a glimpse into the past with its collection of traditional costumes and an explanation of the national examination process.

If you have an appreciation for architecture, the Temple of Literature will captivate you with its centuries-old wooden and tiled structures.
