Minh Mang Tomb, located in Huong Tho Commune, Huong Tra District, on the picturesque west bank of Perfume River, is an exquisite masterpiece of architecture and natural beauty. Let’s delve into the rich history and captivating features of this remarkable monument.

Location & History

Positioned about 12km south of Hue City center, Minh Mang Tomb is nestled at the convergence of two tributaries, forming the magnificent Perfume River. The construction of this tomb began in 1840 under the directive of King Minh Mang. Following his passing in 1841, King Thieu Tri faithfully carried on his father’s vision to completion, and the monument was finally unveiled two years later.

Architecture

Considered the most grandiose of all the royal tombs of the Nguyen Dynasty, Minh Mang Tomb comprises a complex of 40 stunning structures, including palaces, temples, and pavilions. The seamless integration of human-made elements with the surrounding natural landscape is a testament to the harmonious beauty of Hue.

At the heart of the tomb is the symmetric axis, known as Than Dao, which stretches from the Great Red Gate to the foot of the Surrounding Wall behind the King’s tomb. Alongside the central gate, two other gates, the Left Rad Gate and the Right Red Gate, lead to the Honour Courtyard, where stone statues of mandarins, elephants, and horses stand proudly. On Mount Phung Than, situated on the other side of these gates, the square Stele Pavilion holds the stele “Thanh Duc Than Cong,” inscribed with the King’s biography and accomplishments by his son. Accessible through the Hien Duc Gate is the Sung An Temple, where King Minh Mang and his wife are revered. Three stone bridges, with the marble bridge exclusively reserved for the King, connect to this temple. Finally, the Hoang Trach Gate leads to the Minh Lau Pavilion, perched atop three heavenly terraces symbolizing heaven, earth, and water. Closer to the tomb area, the crescent-shaped New Moon Lake (Ho Tan Nguyet) lovingly encircles the circular wall surrounding the grave (Buu Thanh).

From a distance, the complex resembles a human figure, with the hill serving as a pillow and its outstretched hands and feet reaching towards the river. Stretching across a colossal 700 meters from the front gate to the back door, the fence preserves the stunning view of the nearby mountains and Cam Ke Hill.

How To Get There

While traveling by car or motorbike is both easy and convenient, thanks to the Tuan Bridge, embarking on a boat trip from Hue to Minh Mang Tomb is an exceptional choice. This journey can be combined with visits to the Thien Mu Pagoda and Hon Chen Temple. Tourists can negotiate with boat owners regarding the price, which typically remains very reasonable and depends on the number of sites and distance covered.
