Location & History
The construction of Dong Khanh Tomb was no easy task. Over a period of 35 years and under the reign of four kings, this majestic tomb slowly took shape. Its location in Thuy Xuan Commune, Hue City offers a peaceful and serene atmosphere, away from the bustling city life.
To better understand the historical context, we must first learn about King Dong Khanh. As an adopted son of King Tu Duc, he assumed the throne with the support of the French colonists. After his coronation, he commissioned the construction of Truy Tu Temple within his father’s tomb, Kien Thai Vuong.
Tragically, King Dong Khanh passed away at the young age of 25, just three years into his reign. As he had not planned his own tomb, his burial was kept simple, on a hill named “Ho Thuan Son,” 30m west of Ngung Hy Temple. During the unstable phase of development under the subsequent king, Thanh Thai, King Dong Khanh was worshipped at Truy Tu Temple, which was later renamed Ngung Hy Temple. It wasn’t until his son, Khai Dinh, ascended the throne in 1917 that the tomb’s construction was finally completed.
What To See
Dong Khanh Tomb’s unique history is reflected in its architecture, which showcases various influences. Ngung Hy Temple, a centerpiece of this monument, stands out with its distinctive triple complex design. The traditional royal furniture and calligraphy within the temple immerse visitors in the grandeur of the past.
Interestingly, Ngung Hy Temple also serves as a bridge between traditional and modern art. It incorporates both Western and Eastern inspirations, resulting in a fusion of styles. One of the prominent features is a collection of 24 drawings depicting the Chinese story “Nhi thap tu hieu” – a tale of filial piety.
Furthermore, the tomb area stands in stark contrast to the temple’s traditional design. Here, Western influences are prevalent, evident in the architectural peculiarities, decorative models, and building materials. Cement, tile bricks, and bricks replace the typical stone elements, creating a unique visual experience.
