The Van La Underground Tunnel in Quang Binh is not just another historical site; it’s a testament to the resilience and unity of the Vietnamese people during the Vietnam War. Let’s explore the fascinating story behind this remarkable construction and discover the useful information you need to plan your visit.

Location & History
Situated in Luong Ninh village, Quang Binh, the Van La Underground Tunnel stands as the first and only tunnel of its kind in the region. It was born out of the necessity to protect the local population from the relentless bombardment and attacks carried out by American troops.
In June 1966, the villagers decided to construct an underground sanctuary that would enable them to work and fight safely. Perched on a hill overlooking the rice fields, the Van La Tunnel was strategically positioned for quick access. Alongside a network of roads and trenches, it formed a formidable defense system.
This L-shaped tunnel spans over 150 meters in length, with a width and height of 1.5 meters and 1.8 meters respectively. Its parabolic ceiling adds to its architectural intrigue.

After more than 360 days of construction, Van La Tunnel was completed. This subterranean refuge provided safety for over 300 people at certain times. It became the savior, not only for the villagers of Luong Ninh but also for soldiers and messengers hailing from various parts of the country, shielding them from the devastating American weaponry.
Recognizing the historical significance of the tunnel, the Committee of Quang Binh took the initiative to fully renovate and transform it into a national historical site in 2006. Today, you can visit this remarkable piece of history and marvel at its enduring legacy.
