If you’re ever in Quang Binh province, make sure to visit the historical Dong Hoi Citadel. This impressive complex of high fences and towers served as a fortress to protect the kings and the capital of the Nguyen dynasty dating back to 1630[^1^]. The construction of Dong Hoi Citadel began in 1812 on the site where King Nguyen Phuc Nguyen had previously built Tran Ninh Rampart and Dong Hai Post in 1774[^1^]. Later, King Minh Mang enlisted the help of a French general to redesign the citadel, transforming it into an invincible fortress with a star-shaped structure in 1824[^1^]. Standing at a towering height of 4 meters and with a perimeter of 1,860 meters, the citadel boasts an impressive 1.35-meter-wide façade facing the west[^1^]. The citadel also features three grand gates – North, South, and East – each adorned with eight-roof towers.
