The Hoan Kiem Lake holds both geographical and symbolic significance as the heart of Hanoi. Its allure grows as you delve deeper into its history and legends.

Legends

According to legend, King Le Loi stumbled upon a gleaming metal bar while visiting a friend. It was revealed that his friend had caught the bar in his fishing net. Intrigued, the King requested the bar and transformed it into a sword. To his astonishment, the words “Thuan Thien” (harmonious with heaven) appeared on the sword.

Realizing that he had received a gift from heaven, King Le Loi wielded the sword in battle against a neighboring country. As peace finally prevailed in early 1428, the King encountered a tortoise emerging from the waters of Thuy Quan, now known as Hoan Kiem Lake. The tortoise proclaimed, “Please return the sword to the Dragon King.” Without hesitation, the King tossed the sword into the lake, and the tortoise retrieved it, resulting in the renaming of the lake to Hoan Kiem.

About the Lake

Beyond its historical significance, Hoan Kiem Lake boasts unique characteristics. The water’s hue, reminiscent of no other lake in the country, ranges from light to dark shades of green, mirroring the sky’s reflection. The lake is also home to numerous tortoises, a sight rarely seen in other Vietnamese lakes. If you’re fortunate, you may catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures emerging from the water. As tortoises hold sacred status in Vietnamese culture, alongside dragons, phoenixes, and unicorns, Hoan Kiem Lake has become a revered place, nurturing these precious animals.

Even after Hanoi’s extensive expansion in 2009, Hoan Kiem Lake remains a source of pride for locals, serving as a central point for measuring distances. Although some new residents may live far from the lake, a walk along its shores reveals the unique rhythm of life in this captivating city.

Activities

If you can rise early, around 5 a.m., you’ll witness a spectacle of elderly individuals and teenagers engaging in various activities, from yoga and tai-chi to aerobics. It seems as though the entire city comes alive for morning exercises. People gather in groups or engage in solitary workouts, with or without equipment. Remarkably, during a high-profile meeting in Hanoi, the Australian and Japanese Prime Ministers even joined the early morning joggers around the lake.

In the afternoon, you’ll observe a bustling scene of motorbikes winding around the lake, complemented by the presence of “cyclos,” the famous three-wheeled carriers that transport tourists.

Towards the north end, where the Old Quarter resides, colorful garments and shoes captivate the eye, accompanied by the aroma of trees and coffee.

As darkness descends, couples stroll hand in hand along the lake’s edge, seeking solace in the summer breeze or warmth amidst the winter chill. If you have the opportunity, take a seat on one of the stone benches, savor the view, and engage in a delightful conversation with local friends over an ice cream cone.

How to Get There

Hoan Kiem Lake is conveniently located within walking distance of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, where most hotels are situated. The journey from Noi Bai Airport takes approximately 40 minutes. For those staying in the West Lake area, simply take Yen Phu Road towards the Old Quarter and head east to reach Hoan Kiem Lake.
