Location & History
In the 17th century, Lord Nguyen and his army found themselves in a dire situation. Fleeing from the Tay Son troops, they were plagued by thirst and a scarcity of fresh water. Desperate for survival, Lord Nguyen resorted to a heartfelt prayer. Pointing his sword towards the heavens, he pleaded, “If the Highest still wants me to be King, please provide me with food and water!”
To his astonishment, as soon as Lord Nguyen plunged his sword into the ground, a miraculous flow of fresh water gushed forth. This incredible site became known as Gieng Ngu, The King’s Well, or the Magic Well. It is a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the human spirit.

Choosing Phu Quoc as his sanctuary, Lord Nguyen used this newfound oasis to regain strength and recover from the ravages of the war with the Tay Son Revolt. It was in Phu Quoc that he successfully defeated the Tay Son troops and eventually gained control over Saigon-Gia Dinh. The Magic Well played a pivotal role in this triumph.
