The French colonization period may be long gone, but the remnants of one of the darkest chapters in Vietnam’s history still stand as witnesses. Son La Prison, situated in Son La town, serves as a poignant reminder of the once turbulent times. Step into this haunting place and delve into the past that shaped the nation.

Entrance to Son La Prison

A Glimpse into History

Established in 1908 at the heart of Son La town and atop Khau Ca Hill, Son La Prison started small but soon became a significant site where countless political prisoners were imprisoned. During its notorious heyday, this jail became synonymous with cruelty and terror, where the indomitable spirit and patriotism of prisoners were tested through the bloodiest means. In spite of this, for the resolute revolutionaries inside Son La, it became a “college” where their perseverance, unity, and fighting spirit were strengthened. The stories of their tenacity and courage, like that of To Hieu, continue to echo through the corridors of this dark place.

Inside the Walls

Although parts of the original structure were partially demolished after the wars, Son La Prison still retains its core features, particularly the prison system and the torture facilities that lie within. While the outer surroundings may seem unremarkable, entering the prison leaves visitors astounded by the stark and oppressive atmosphere. It becomes incomprehensible how the French colonialists could imprison people in such horrific conditions.

Remnants at Son La Prison

The air is damp, the smell unpleasant, and insects linger everywhere. The underground cells are even worse, lacking the basic elements essential for human life, such as light and fresh air, which are treated as luxuries. Additionally, there are separate rooms dedicated to torture, housing collections of terrifying instruments and methods employed to extract information from prisoners. Witnessing these rooms evokes a profound sense of horror and gratitude that one has not personally experienced the barbarity of these tools of torment.
