Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Saigon, where the influential Archbishop of Saigon resides. The construction of this grand Basilica began in 1877 and took three years to complete under the guidance of J. Bourad, the architect behind its design. In 1962, the church was honored with the prestigious Basilica title, one of only four in Vietnam.
The cathedral boasts a diverse collection of stained-glass windows depicting saints and biblical stories, which is a rarity among Vietnamese churches. Additionally, it houses a genuine pipe organ, revered as the king of instruments. However, due to severe damage, it has been replaced by an electronic pipe organ produced by Rodgers.
Outside the main building, you’ll find a serene garden adorned with a marble statue of Mary, the Queen of Peace. Created by Italian sculptor G. Ciocchetti in 1959, this statue adds a touch of beauty and tranquility to the surroundings.
