Location & History

Originally named the Louis Finot Museum, the Vietnam History Museum was built in 1926 by the Ecole Française d’Extreme-Orient and completed in 1932. Later, the Vietnamese Government took over the museum, renaming it the Museum of Vietnam History. The doors opened to the public on September 3, 1958.

What to See

Despite its modest size of 2,000 square meters, the museum provides a comprehensive overview of Vietnam’s history. The exhibition is thoughtfully organized in chronological order across two floors, spanning ten sections. From the prehistoric era to the moment when President Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the Declaration of Independence, each period is expertly presented.

The museum houses more than 7,000 invaluable artifacts, some dating back thousands of years, representing the cultural diversity of Vietnam. The collection not only includes objects of Vietnamese origin but also showcases influences from China, Japan, Thailand, and the Champ culture. Particularly noteworthy are the more than 50 stone-engraved artworks from the 7th to 13th centuries.

Visitors to the Vietnam History Museum are encouraged to employ their imagination and sensitivity to understand and appreciate the exhibited artifacts and relics. While the descriptions are sparse, mostly in Vietnamese, they provide a glimpse into the object’s identity rather than its meaning. Embark on a journey of art interpretation and test your ability to perceive the beauty within.
