Da Lat, the picturesque hill town located in Vietnam, is known for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture. But it is also a haven for food lovers seeking unique and delicious culinary experiences. In this article, we will explore the mouthwatering dishes of Da Lat through the expert eyes of Chef Peter Cuong Franklin, an executive chef on a mission to reimagine Vietnamese cuisine.

Da Lat’s Culinary Treasures

Da Lat boasts an abundance of fresh produce and meats sourced from the surrounding farms. The city’s fertile land and cool highlands climate make it the perfect environment for growing a diverse range of ingredients. Avocados, strawberries, asparagus, artichokes, grapes, tea, coffee, flowers, and wild mountain mushrooms are just a few examples of the treasures Da Lat has to offer.

A Melting Pot of Flavors

Da Lat’s culinary scene is a fusion of different regional and international cuisines. With a rich history influenced by the French colonial period and a diverse population that has migrated from various parts of Central Vietnam, Da Lat boasts a wide range of flavors and dishes. From the famous central region dishes like “bánh bèo,” “bánh xèo,” and “bún bò Huế” to European and Chinese culinary traditions, the food in Da Lat is a delightful mix that caters to every palate.

The Must-Try Dishes of Da Lat

  1. Mì Quảng

A classic dish from Da Lat, “mì Quảng,” is a pork noodle soup made with yellow turmeric rice noodles. Chef Peter recommends trying this dish at Mì Quảng Thành, located at 58C Phan Đình Phùng. The flavorful and rich broth, made with generous amounts of pork knuckle, sets this version apart from others.

  1. Bánh Bèo

“Bánh bèo” is a small, spoon-sized bite made of rice and tapioca flour, steamed in a ceramic bowl. This Hue-originated dish is served with a light fish sauce, fried shallots, fresh chili, and crispy pork skin. Chef Peter recommends visiting Banh Beo so 4 Ba Huong at 402 Phan Dinh Phung to savor this delightful snack.

  1. Phở Bò

Da Lat-style “phở” is a unique blend of Hanoi-style phở and fresh herbs and lettuce greens introduced by the French during the colonial era. To experience this fusion of flavors, head to Quán 1C at 1 Tăng Bạt Hổ.

  1. Bánh Mì Xíu Mại

Dalat food guide

Unlike the cold cuts in Saigon-style “bánh mì,” the Da Lat-style “bánh mì xiu mai” is served hot. A bowl of warm pork meatball broth accompanies a warm grilled baguette, along with a mixture of shredded papaya and fresh herbs. Chef Peter recommends trying this comforting dish at Bánh mì xíu mại BH, located at 16 Nguyễn Chí Thanh.

  1. Bánh Căn

“Bánh căn” is a Da Lat specialty that evolved from the Hue “bánh bèo.” Grilled over a charcoal brazier and topped with a quail egg or duck egg, this dish is best enjoyed in the early morning hours as breakfast or a light snack. Visit Bánh Căn Cây Bơ at 56 Tăng Bạt Hổ (open from 6 am to 10 am) for an authentic experience.
