The Dalat Railway Station holds a significant place in the history of Vietnam. Built in 1932 under the supervision of French architects Moncet and Reveron, this railway station was part of a plan to transform Dalat into a paradise in Indochina. Although it faced many challenges during construction, including traversing the Lam Vien Plateau, the station was finally completed six years later.
Initially, the railway saw limited use due to the abandonment caused by attacks during the Vietnam War. However, in 1991, a 7km section between Dalat and Trai Mat was reconstructed and opened for tourists. Today, the Dalat Railway Station stands as a testament to the country’s colonial past and is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts.
A Glimpse into the Past
The Dalat Railway Station is a stunning example of colonial engineering and architecture. Designed in the Art Deco style, it seamlessly blends with the local characteristics and culture. Its three high pointed roofs resemble the peaks of Lang Biang Mountain or the communal houses of ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Each roof features multi-color glass windows, and the central roof proudly displays a recently restored large clock.
One of the standout features of the station is its cog railways. The total length of the railway is 84km, with a 16km cog railway designed by Swedish engineers. Due to the mountainous terrain, a cog railroad and locomotive system were essential to provide traction for uphill slopes and control the train’s speed when descending. Overcoming the challenges of the rugged landscape, the construction took an impressive 24 years to complete.
An Enchanting Train Journey
In the past, the Dalat Railway Station operated two daily trains from Dalat to Nha Trang and Dalat to Saigon, with separate compartments for passengers and goods. Sadly, during the Vietnam wars, the railway and station became targets for bombings, resulting in severe damage. However, after the fall of Saigon in 1975, the railways were repaired and brought back into service.
Since 1991, the Dalat railway has been a favorite attraction for tourists. This 7km route from Dalat to Trai Mat station offers visitors a glimpse into the peaceful daily lives of the locals. Along the way, you can explore the vibrant local market, discover fresh vegetables and fruits, and visit the charming Linh Phuoc Pagoda. Riding the train at a leisurely pace, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Dalat’s picturesque landscapes and experience the purest highland atmosphere. While the seats may not be the most comfortable, the unique nostalgia of the past makes this train trip truly worth experiencing. Trains operate five times a day, departing at 7.45AM, 9.50AM, 11.55AM, 2.00PM, and 4.05PM. Tickets cost VND 106,000 for foreigners and VND 72,000 for Vietnamese travelers.
