Budget Tip: How to Avoid Overpaying in Vietnam

If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam, one of the major challenges you’ll likely face is being overcharged. Overcharging can happen in various ways and can take you by surprise. Your hotel room might be priced at double its actual value, and the cost of a meal may triple. Additionally, if you enter a store without visible price labels, be prepared to pay a premium! Even friendly shopkeepers seem to have an inexplicable desire to overcharge tourists on every purchase.

Local people often argue that the cost of living in Vietnam has increased due to inflation, justifying higher prices for foreigners. While these inflated prices may still be relatively cheap for backpackers, many people disagree with this practice. However, don’t let the assumption that everyone is trying to cheat you ruin your trip.

The reality is that prices in Vietnam have become more standardized since the early 90s. To avoid overpaying, take the time to familiarize yourself with the typical prices of goods, drinks, and dishes. After a few shopping experiences, you’ll start to grasp the actual prices of almost everything. Compare the prices at a restaurant with those mentioned in this article. If they don’t match, don’t hesitate to question the server!

Another strategy is to observe how local people buy the same items before making your own purchase. Additionally, employ basic bargaining tactics: ask for a significant discount and be prepared to walk away. If your counteroffer aligns with the seller’s actual price, they’re likely to call you back. Start with a price that is only 60% of the quoted price, and you’ll probably end up paying at least half the original price!

Furthermore, always double-check the price you’re expected to pay. If you don’t understand what the seller is saying, you might end up paying a different (usually higher) price later. Make bargaining a habit! Never settle for the full price in Vietnam (unless the supermarket has labeled prices). Otherwise, your budget might mysteriously dwindle each day, leaving you astonished.
