Welcome to Thien Mu Pagoda, a serene sanctuary nestled on the northern bank of the Perfume River in Hue. With its rich history and stunning architecture, this pagoda offers a captivating experience that will leave you in awe.

Location & History

Located at the end of Kim Long Road, Thien Mu Pagoda holds a special place in the hearts of the locals. Legend has it that an old lady in red appeared on top of the hill, foretelling the arrival of an important figure. This inspired Lord Nguyen Hoang to build the pagoda, which he named Thien Mu. Over the years, the pagoda has undergone renovations and is now considered the unofficial symbol of the ancient city of Hue.

What To See

As you approach the pagoda, your eyes will be drawn to the magnificent seven-storey octagonal tower known as Phuoc Duyen Tower. Built in the mid-19th century, it was a tribute to King Thieu Tri’s grandmother on her 80th birthday anniversary. Step through the 3-door gate and you’ll encounter 12 towering wooden sculptures of temple guardians. In the heart of the complex lies Dai Hung Palace, the main sanctuary of Thien Mu Pagoda, where you’ll find impressive Buddha sculptures and a giant bell. The air is filled with the fragrance of incense, creating a peaceful atmosphere for prayer and reflection.

A Monument of National Significance

Within the pagoda complex, you’ll find a building that houses a national relic: the car that carried the monk Thich Quang Duc to his self-immolation protest in Saigon in 1963. This powerful symbol of resistance stands as a testament to the pagoda’s historical significance.

Embracing Nature and Tradition

Thien Mu Pagoda not only offers cultural and historical marvels but also treats visitors to breathtaking natural scenery. Perched on a hill overlooking the picturesque Perfume River, the pagoda provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The lush pine trees, delicate manmade ponds, and meticulously crafted bonsai trees contribute to the peaceful ambiance that sets this religious site apart.

How To Get There

Thien Mu Pagoda is conveniently located just 4 kilometers from Hue City Center. Getting here is a breeze, as you can choose to travel by motorbike, bike, or even by boat. If you opt for a boat trip, you can include visits to the Hon Chen Temple and Minh Mang Tomb. We recommend a bike ride, as the scenic route is relatively short and showcases the beauty of the area. You can also combine a visit to Thien Mu Pagoda with a trip to the Hue Temple of Literature and Huyen Khong Pagoda, both just a few kilometers away. For bike enthusiasts, it’s best to embark on your journey in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat of the day.

When Best To Visit

Thien Mu Pagoda is open daily from early morning until 5PM. For a truly captivating experience, we suggest visiting in the early morning to witness the pagoda come alive with refreshing activities or at sunset when the sky and river create a picturesque scene. Special occasions such as the 15th of April and July in the Lunar Calendar, as well as the Tet Holiday, offer unique ceremonies and the opportunity to savor traditional vegetarian cuisine. Don’t miss these vibrant cultural celebrations!

Tips for a Memorable Visit

To ensure a smooth and respectful visit, we recommend avoiding tight and short clothing such as short skirts, as entrance to the main hall, Dai Hung, is prohibited for those wearing these outfits. Additionally, maintaining a peaceful atmosphere is essential, so please refrain from making noise during your visit.
