To some, haggling can be an intimidating task. For others, it’s simply annoying and time-consuming. But let’s take a moment to appreciate the bright side of this activity – haggling is a whole cultural experience in itself.

If you hail from Europe or North America, you’re probably accustomed to fixed prices and well-noted tags. In Vietnam, however, like in many other developing countries, price tags like to play hide-and-seek. Except for supermarkets and restaurants, every transaction is open to bargaining. And you know what? There’s an undeniable sense of triumph that comes with successfully pushing down the price of an item.

To embark on this adventure, it’s crucial to know the price range of the things you’re trying to haggle for. Polite beginnings can be as simple as asking, “Can you give me a discount?” or “It’s a bit expensive for me, could we negotiate?” If the shop owner doesn’t indicate that the price is fixed, the “battle” may continue. You can start by offering two-thirds of the initial price (or even half if you feel it’s warranted) and haggle until both parties reach an agreement.

Keep in mind that the closer you are to touristy areas and the wealthier you appear, the more likely it is that products are overpriced. Soon enough, you’ll realize that the satisfaction of the haggling experience matters more than reaching the actual value of the item you want to purchase.

For more specific advice on shopping in Vietnam, check out our bargaining tips. It’s time to embrace the art of haggling and enjoy the unique cultural encounter it brings.
