  2. How To Get There
  3. Best Time To Visit
  4. Useful Information

Are you ready to embark on an extraordinary adventure into the depths of the earth? Look no further than Son Doong Cave, the largest cave known to mankind. Located in Quang Binh, Vietnam, this natural wonder is simply awe-inspiring.

About Son Doong Cave

Discovered in 2009 by local lumberjack Ho Khanh, Son Doong Cave mesmerizes with its sheer size and unparalleled beauty. Stretching over 9 kilometers, the cave boasts a chamber that is 200 meters wide and 150 meters high, making it larger than life. To put it into perspective, Son Doong could effortlessly accommodate an entire city with skyscrapers towering 40 stories high, or even allow a Boeing 747 to soar through its cavernous expanse. In fact, it is more than double the size of its closest competitor, Deer Cave in Malaysia. The stalagmites found here are among the tallest in the world, with some reaching a staggering height of over 70 meters.

But Son Doong isn’t just impressive in size; it has been hailed by BBC News as the most beautiful cave on Earth. If you’ve ever watched James Cameron’s Avatar, you’ll find similarities between the otherworldly scenes on Pandora and the captivating landscapes within Son Doong. Untouched by humans and possessing its own river, jungle, and climate, this cave is a surreal and magical realm. The stark temperature contrast between the outside world and the cave’s interior gives rise to ethereal clouds of mist, creating an atmosphere that feels truly miraculous.

How To Get There

Getting to Son Doong is an adventure in itself. Located in Son Trach, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, Vietnam, the cave is not easily accessible. Prepare for a thrilling journey through the dense tropical forests of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. From the Ho Chi Minh Highway, you’ll trek approximately 10 kilometers, which typically takes around 6 hours.

By Air

The nearest airport to Son Doong is Dong Hoi Airport in Dong Hoi, the capital city of Quang Binh Province. To expedite your expedition, flying is the optimal choice. Vietnam Airlines offers flights from Hanoi to Dong Hoi, while Vietjet Air offers daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Hoi. The travel time is about one hour for both routes.

By Train

Alternatively, you can embark on the Reunification Express trains. Vietnam’s elongated shape means that there are train services from various cities, such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Hue, Vinh, and more, all heading to Dong Hoi. The travel time varies depending on your departure point.

Buses and taxis are also available, offering additional route options and flexibility. Prices and travel times may vary depending on your starting location and the service provider.

From Dong Hoi, you’ll be transported to Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, and then onwards to the trekking point on Road 20 of the Ho Chi Minh Highway by bus. From there, the only vehicle available is your own two feet. Be prepared to spend approximately one day traversing forests, hills, and rivers on your way to Son Doong. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to visit an ethnic village called Ban Doong and spend the night in Hang En Cave.
