Step into the past as you explore this well-preserved gem, immersing yourself in the rich history and cultural significance it holds.

Location & History

The name “Tan Ky,” meaning “Progress Shop,” was chosen by the second generation of the family as a representation of their aspirations for a prosperous business. Despite the challenges posed by the town’s diminishing trade and the annual floods, the Tan Ky House has remained a symbol of resilience. While it may not be the oldest house in Hoi An, it is undoubtedly the most meticulously maintained.

What To See

Every corner of the Tan Ky House reveals a tapestry of untouched details. From the storage area to the exterior structure crafted from bricks and tiles, the house exudes an air of authenticity. Step onto the Bat Trang brick floors and appreciate the use of jack-fruit trees, ironwood, and peck-wood for the furniture. The thick roofs and wooden walls ensure a cool refuge in summer and a cozy haven in winter.

This architectural marvel symbolizes the harmonious blending of Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese influences. During the 16th and 17th centuries, these three communities coexisted in Hoi An, contributing to the house’s unique character. The triple-beam structure represents heaven, earth, and humanity, while the five round blocks embody the five essential Eastern elements – metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Delicate carvings adorn the roof’s edges and furniture, exhibiting intricate Oriental artistry. Among the house’s many treasures, the most renowned is a pair of vertical panels in the central courtyard. Each stroke of writing cleverly forms the shape of a bird, culminating in one hundred birds that symbolize perfection.
