Location and History
Nam Giao Esplanade is situated in Duong Xuan Village, south of Hue City. Construction began on March 25, 1806, shortly after King Gia Long ascended the throne. In early 1807, the first God worship ceremonies were held here. Among the offering terraces of previous dynasties, the Nguyen Dynasty’s terrace is the sole survivor, standing proudly to this day.
Architecture
The majestic esplanade showcases the ancient belief system that encompasses the universe. Its design follows the principles of Yin and Yang, representing the five elements of nature: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. Adjacent to the main terrace, there are several other structures that support the offering ceremony. These include the “Trai cung” where the king stays before the ceremony, “Than tru” which serves as the kitchen to prepare sacrifices, and “Than kho” where the ceremony’s tools are stored.
In the past, Nam Giao Esplanade was enclosed by a sturdy basalt wall, which sadly no longer stands. Pine trees were also planted around the area, fulfilling Emperor Minh Mang’s tradition of having each son and mandarin plant their own pine tree and care for it.
Religious and Political Significance
Nam Giao Esplanade played a pivotal role in the religious and political life of the Nguyen Dynasty. Preparations for the ceremony took months for the Protocol and Administration Ministries. On the day of the sacrifice offering, triumphal arches were erected in every village and commune of Thua Thien-Hue. The emperor would pass by these altars from Ngo Mon Noon gate to Trai Cung. The ceremony itself included hanging big flags of different colors on the esplanade’s doors, symbolizing various directions.

The royal ceremony is often restored on the occasion of the Hue Festival, where prayers for a peaceful country and prosperous people are offered.
