Are you seeking a place of tranquility in the bustling city of Ho Chi Minh? Look no further than Giac Lam Pagoda. Established in 1744 by Chinese settler Ly Thuy Long, it was later converted into a Buddhist temple under the guidance of the first abbot, Thich Vien Quang. Today, with its rich history and cultural significance, Giac Lam Pagoda stands as one of the oldest and most revered Buddhist temples in Ho Chi Minh City.

Location & History

Located in District 11, just a 20-minute drive from the city center, Giac Lam Pagoda offers a peaceful escape from the urban chaos. If you’re unfamiliar with the city streets, taking a taxi is highly recommended. As you approach the temple, you’ll be captivated by its architectural beauty and the serene ambiance that envelops the surroundings.

What to See

Step inside the temple’s grand hall and prepare to be mesmerized by its traditional Asian elements, which reflect the influence of Taoism and Buddhism. The Bagua ceiling, adorned with celestial symbols, adds a mystical touch to the atmosphere. The hall houses an impressive collection of 113 statues, with most crafted from wood, while eight are made of bronze. As a Theravada Buddhist temple, Giac Lam Pagoda pays homage to Bodhisattva and the Eighteen Arhats. Additionally, it incorporates the veneration of Goddesses from Vietnam’s folk religion. Despite the diversity of religious practices, the primary focus remains on Buddha.

Don’t forget to ascend to the 7th floor, where a multi-storey stupa holds precious Buddhist relics. By seeking blessings from these relics, you’ll experience a profound connection to the temple’s spirituality and historical significance.
