Have you ever wondered what happens when French and Vietnamese cultures blend together? The Domaine de Marie Church in Dalat is a perfect representation of this fascinating interaction. Not only is it a place of worship for the local community, but it also attracts visitors from far and wide.

Location & History

Perched on a picturesque hill at 1 Ngo Quyen St., Ward 6, just 0.6 miles southwest of the city center, the Domaine de Marie Church holds a significant place in the hearts of the people. This architectural complex, spanning 29.6 acres, comprises the main church and two convents. The breathtaking panoramic view it offers of the city is an added bonus.

Built between 1930 and 1943, the church showcases a seamless blend of 17th-century French style and traditional Vietnamese folk art. Before 1975, it served as the main abbey for over 50 female Vietnamese nuns who dedicated themselves to various social activities, including running orphanages and kindergartens. The harmonious combination of Western and Vietnamese influences sets this church apart from others of its time.

What To See

As you approach the Domaine de Marie Church, you’ll be captivated by its stunning façade. The triangular shape, adorned with numerous arch-shaped windows and a prominent cross on top, immediately catches the eye. The centerpiece of the façade is a magnificent rose-shaped window, reminiscent of French church architecture from the late 17th century. The walls combine Normandy-style elements, playing with light and shadow to create a visually striking effect.

What sets this church apart is its Vietnamese touch. The roofs of the church draw inspiration from the design of Nha Rong, a traditional stilt house found in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. Though they may seem simple, the grandeur lies in the elegant stained glass windows that illuminate the church’s interior. The 3-meter-high statue of Mary, sculpted by French architect Jonchère in 1943, bears a striking resemblance to a Vietnamese woman. This statue was a generous gift from the wife of the Indochina governor, who was laid to rest behind the church as per her wishes. The area surrounding the church blooms with the exquisite Hai Tien flowers, adding to the enchantment.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of French and Vietnamese art intertwined within its walls.
