In the sacred land of Buddhism, Hue, lies the magnificent Tu Hieu Pagoda. Known as both the largest and oldest pagoda in the area, it holds immense historical and cultural value, making it a popular sightseeing destination.
A Shrine Rooted in History
Tu Hieu Pagoda was named by King Tu Duc, inspired by the incredible story of Most Venerable Nhat Dinh, the founder of the pagoda. Nhat Dinh, a devout monk, demonstrated remarkable filial piety by following a doctor’s advice to prepare meat and fish for his ailing mother, despite societal criticism.
The name “Tu Hieu” translates to “Filial Piety,” representing the two key virtues of Buddhism. Emperor Tu Duc bestowed the title “Sac tu Tu Hieu tu” upon the pagoda, appreciating Nhat Dinh’s dedication to his mother. Interestingly, Emperor Tu Duc himself was renowned for his devotion to his parents, King Thieu Tri and Queen Tu Du.
Serenity Amidst Nature
Tu Hieu Pagoda is situated just 5km southwest of Hue’s city center. Its picturesque surroundings feature a pine forest, a serene stream, and an elegant architectural style. Resembling the Chinese character “Khau” (mouth), the pagoda’s main building consists of three rooms and two wings. The central sanctuary is dedicated to the worship of the Buddha.
One unique feature of Tu Hieu Pagoda is an altar devoted to Le Van Duyet, a mandarin during the Gia Long reign. Traditional altars honoring local Buddhist devotees and Quan Cong are also present. The construction and maintenance of the pagoda were made possible by the generous donations of these individuals, who were laid to rest in the nearby graveyard.
As you enter the pagoda, you’ll be captivated by the grandeur of its three-level curved entrance gate, intricately designed and adorned. In the center of the upper level stands the statue of the Dharma guardian (Ho Phap), facing the crescent lotus pond. Stele houses, engraved with the pagoda’s history, flank the courtyard, offering visitors a glimpse into the past.
The Revered Thich Nhat Hanh
Tu Hieu Pagoda is also renowned as the root temple of The Most Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, teacher, author, poet, and peace activist currently residing in France. His connection to the pagoda adds to its spiritual significance.
