The De Castries Bunker holds a significant place in history as the underground shelter of French General De Castries. Strategically located in the heart of the Dien Bien Phu Garrison in Muong Thanh, Dien Bien, this bunker stands as a testament to the bravery and resilience of the Vietnamese people.
Witness the Living History
Despite enduring severe damage during the combat in 1945, the structure and arrangement of the bunker have been preserved. Today, standing atop any high hill in the garrison, one can catch sight of this famous bunker, which took the Viet Minh army an astounding 55 days and nights to capture.
The bunker stretches an impressive 20 meters in length and 8 meters in width. It comprises four rooms for boarding and working. In the past, the French ingeniously constructed a trench using logs and bags of sand, connecting the bunker with a blockhouse on A1 Hill. Though the trench has vanished with time, the steel arches and bags of sand atop the roof of the bunker are still visible.
A Meeting Place of Influential Leaders
General De Castries’ bunker served as the backdrop for numerous historic encounters. It witnessed the presence of impactful figures such as French Prime Minister Joseph Laniel, American President Dwight Eisenhower, and English Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Alongside them, renowned reporters and journalists also graced the bunker with their presence. Moreover, it was at this very site that De Castries himself was captured on May 7th, 1954.
